The At Home Photo Shoot Guide

Why a an at home session?

Maybe you and your partner hate cold weather. Perhaps you are simply not up to dressing up and organizing a big to-do. Or maybe you’re not necessarily a fan of being the center of attention. Hey! you just love the home you’ve built together and want to feature it!

If any of these apply to you and your partner, maybe a photo shoot at home is a great option for you. Below are five tips for planning your at home session.

TIP #1: prep your home!

Photographers love any source of light! If you have big windows, great sources of natural light like skylights, or even any cool light fixtures in particular rooms, make sure you feel comfortable getting shots in or near those spaces.

No need to change the layout of your home or make major adjustments, but do make sure your space is cleared of anything you would not want in photos. Prep as you would for a dinner party. Have things you love like fave plants, blankets, furniture or decor pieces readily available for you to use and play with.

TIP #2: SET THE MOOD!

Light some candles! Put on your favorite records or songs! Prep your favorite snacks!

The best couples photos come from genuine interaction and fun. Make sure your space feels comfortable and filled with love. Music is a great way to ease the mood and encourage dancing photos as well!

TIP #3: Don’t be shy or scared to play around!

Get ready for your Photographer to be inspired by your space! I love finding little corners and “moments” across your space to shoot in. That being said, don’t be afraid to share your ideas for shots, you know your home best. Do you have a corner of the couch you love? Let’s play there! Do you two love to make s’mores in the microwave? Make them! Never actually used your tub? Let’s pop champagne in it!

TIP #4: INCORPORATE PROPS AND THINGS YOU LOVE!

Pull out your favorite board game to play! Order Pizza or take out from your favorite local spot! Snuggle your dog for some shots!

Since your session is at home, it might feel limited in terms of space, but not in possibility! With all your things at your fingertips, make sure you get creative and have lots of “props” on hand!

tip #5: DON’T WANT TO DO IT AT HOME? HIRE SOMEONE ELSES!

A lot of couples in NYC reach out wanting an at-home session but their spaces are small, windowless, or their space doesn’t match the aesthetic they want. Renting a beautiful home-like space might be a great option. Peerspace is a great studio rental site that has lots of apartment or home style studios for rent.
